They have more mass, so more thermal inertia and better acoustics, and they work as plates: cantilevers and large openings need fewer additional beams.<\/p><p>For a villa the choice is not ideological. The two systems are often combined: CLT where wide spans, cantilevers or floors carrying a stone bath are needed; timber frame where maximum insulation with thin walls counts. In AV Home, the villa we designed in Dueville, in the province of Vicenza, Italy, the <strong>first floor is built in CLT<\/strong>: the volumes that seem to float above the large ground-floor glazing are cross laminated timber panels, assembled on site and then clad. This is the case described above: cantilevers and large openings are where CLT performs best. With the villa finished nobody would guess that part of the house is timber, and that is the point of this guide: the structural system serves the architecture, it does not decide it.<\/p><p>The site photos show the stages that really matter. First the CLT structure with insulation and services running in the planned voids; then the volumes closed and clad in dark while the rest of the house is still in scaffolding.
