Maldives travel

Choose the atoll before the hotel: Maldives travel between biosphere reserves, manta rays and water villas.

Maldives travel: choose the atoll before the hotel

Maldives travel is almost always planned starting from the resort. It is better to reverse the order: the Maldives are a chain of very different atolls, and the atoll decides what you will see in the water, how long the transfer takes and which season to go in.

Here you will find the experiences worth the trip, verified practical information and the sources at the end.

Experiences not to miss

Baa Atoll, a biosphere reserve

Since 2011 Baa Atoll has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the only one in the country: coral reefs, inhabited islands, resorts and strictly protected zones coexist under a single conservation plan.

The manta rays of Hanifaru Bay

Inside Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay is a marine protected area where, during the south-west monsoon, plankton attracts large groups of manta rays. The season usually runs from May to November; entry is snorkel-only, with limited access and accompanied by rangers.

The coral reef

Turtles, reef sharks, clownfish: a great deal can be seen just swimming from the beach or the villa. Before choosing a resort it is worth asking about its house reef and how close it is.

The water villas

Overwater villas are the symbol of the Maldives: you step into the lagoon straight from the terrace. Many resorts are reached from Malé airport by seaplane or speedboat; the flight over the atolls is already part of the journey.

When to go to the Maldives

The driest months with the calmest sea are usually December to April. From May to November the south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind: it is also manta season in Hanifaru and often the time of lower prices.

Entry documents

Before any Maldives travel, check your documents. According to the Viaggiare Sicuri page of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (checked on 10 October 2026), for Italian citizens:

  • a passport valid for at least 30 days after the return date is required;
  • a tourist visa is mandatory (procedure on the IMUGA portal);
  • every traveller must complete the Traveller Declaration on IMUGA within the 96 hours before arrival;
  • yellow fever vaccination is required only for travellers arriving from at-risk areas.

Requirements depend on your nationality and change often: always check your own government’s travel advice before leaving.
