Dominican Republic travel
Whales in Samaná, mangroves in Los Haitises, the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo: Dominican Republic travel beyond the resort.
Dominican Republic travel: what makes the journey worthwhile
For many people, Dominican Republic travel means a week in a beach resort in Punta Cana. The country offers far more: a bay where humpback whales arrive every winter, a national park of mangroves and limestone islets, the first colonial city of the Americas, wild beaches in the south-west.
This page gathers the experiences worth the trip, with verified practical information and the sources at the end. If you are also thinking about a home, see our page on the Dominican real estate market.
Experiences not to miss
Samaná and the humpback whales
Samaná Bay, on the north-east coast, is one of the places where humpback whales gather in winter to breed. The season usually runs from mid-January to the end of March; boat trips are regulated by the Ministry of the Environment and leave from the port of Samaná. In front of the bay lies the islet of Cayo Levantado, with its palm-fringed beaches.
Los Haitises National Park
On the other side of the bay, Los Haitises is a landscape of karst hills, mangroves and islets rising from the water. It is visited by boat, through channels and caves that still hold pictographs by the Taíno, the island’s inhabitants before the Europeans arrived.

Saona island
To the south-east, Saona island is part of the Parque Nacional del Este: palms leaning over the water, shallow lagoons, protected nature. It is the classic excursion from Punta Cana and Bayahíbe; on busy days it pays to leave early.

The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo
The capital’s historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990: the first city founded by Europeans in the New World, with its cathedral, coral-stone houses and squares. It is best explored on foot, early in the morning or at sunset.

Bahía de las Águilas
In the south-west, inside Jaragua National Park, Bahía de las Águilas is a long beach with no buildings, reached by boat or by a dirt road. It is far from the tourist airports: it needs a trip of its own, and it repays it.

When to go to the Dominican Republic
The climate is tropical all year round. From January to March, besides drier weather in many areas, it is whale season in Samaná. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center: it does not make the trip inadvisable, but flexible plans and insurance covering cancellations are wise.
Entry documents
Before any Dominican Republic travel, check your documents. According to the Viaggiare Sicuri page of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (checked on 10 October 2026), for Italian citizens:
- a passport is required; no visa is needed for tourist stays of less than 30 days;
- all travellers entering and leaving must complete and submit an online form before travelling;
- there are no mandatory vaccinations.
Requirements depend on your nationality and change often: always check your own government’s travel advice before leaving.

Amanera
Aman resort on the north coast, above the cliff of Playa Grande.
Why we chose it: far from the big Punta Cana resorts, on the wildest coast.
In the photo: a beach on the north coast (Las Terrenas).

Casa de Campo
A resort of about 7,000 acres in La Romana, with a marina, three golf courses and the village of Altos de Chavón.
Why we chose it: it is a resort and a residential community at once: useful for anyone also thinking about a home in the country.

Eden Roc Cap Cana
Relais & Châteaux in the Cap Cana community: suites and villas with private pools.
Why we chose it: an intimate scale, a few minutes from Punta Cana airport.
