Longevity supplements: the European selection
Supplements come last: after sleep, movement, nutrition and environment. How to choose them with your doctor and which brands we select.
Longevity supplements: the last piece, not the first
Longevity supplements are the noisiest sector of the longevity world: promises of rejuvenation, fashionable molecules, protocols with dozens of capsules a day. Our approach is the opposite. Supplements come after sleep, movement, nutrition and the home environment, and are chosen with your doctor on the basis of tests, not advertising.
On this page we explain how to find your way, what European rules provide and which brands we select for transparency on composition, origin and testing. We do not give doses or health effects: those are decisions for the doctor.

What European rules say
In the European Union food supplements are regulated as foods. The health claims a manufacturer can put on the label must be authorised at European level; new substances, so-called novel foods, must be assessed and authorised before sale. This explains why some products heavily advertised abroad cannot be sold as supplements in Europe.
A well-known example is nicotinamide mononucleotide, known as NMN, much cited in the longevity world but not authorised as a novel food in the European Union. That is why we do not present it among our longevity supplements: we prefer brands and products that comply with the rules of the market our readers live in.

Contact usDavid Sinclair, NMN and resveratrol: what we know
Much of the interest in longevity supplements comes from the work of David Sinclair, Harvard geneticist and author of Lifespan. In his book he describes taking NMN and resveratrol, two molecules linked to sirtuins and NAD+. His popularity turned these substances into a commercial phenomenon, but the evidence in humans is still limited: small, short studies with mixed results.
The story of resveratrol is instructive: Sirtris, a company co-founded by Sinclair to develop drugs based on molecules of this kind, was bought by GlaxoSmithKline in 2008, which a few years later stopped its development. In Europe, moreover, NMN is not authorised as a novel food. Sinclair’s theories are a good reason to follow the research, not to fill the pantry: the habits he himself points to, such as movement, measured meals, sleep and heat, remain the foundation, while longevity supplements are assessed with your doctor.

How to choose longevity supplements
Start from tests
A deficiency of vitamin D, iron or vitamin B12 shows up in blood tests; a targeted supplement prescribed by the doctor corrects it. This is the most solid use of supplements. Taking products without knowing whether they are needed, on the other hand, is an expense that rarely brings benefits and sometimes creates interactions with medicines.
Read the label
A good supplement clearly states the quantity of each ingredient, the chemical form, the origin, the batch and the expiry date. Be wary of proprietary blends that do not declare quantities, of promises on the label and of products that do not name the manufacturer. Certifications from independent laboratories are a sign of seriousness.
Few products, well chosen
Better two well-justified longevity supplements than ten taken because of a trend. Each added product increases cost, complexity and the risk of interactions. A periodic review with the doctor lets you drop what is no longer needed.

Nutrition: the foundation of longevity supplements
No supplement makes up for a disorganised diet. The guidance shared by research is simple: plenty of vegetables, pulses, whole grains, fruit, fish, extra virgin olive oil, few ultra-processed foods and little sugar. It is the Mediterranean diet we know, which in Italy we have the privilege of having close at hand.
Seen this way, longevity supplements are a complement for specific situations, not a shortcut. A good nutritionist helps build a tailored diet, taking account of tastes, habits and goals. We cover this on the page devoted to functional anti-ageing nutrition.
The kitchen as a health tool
You eat better in a convenient kitchen. A tidy pantry, where fresh foods are in sight and those to limit are up high; a wide, bright worktop; an area to store vegetables and fruit; space to cook together. These design details make it easier to choose well every day.
In the studio’s projects the kitchen is often the centre of the house: open onto the living room and garden, with natural light and a table where the family really sits. It is an architectural choice with a direct effect on eating habits.

Longevity supplements and sport
Those who train regularly have different needs: protein, hydration, recovery. Here too the starting point is nutrition, with any supplements chosen together with a sports doctor or nutritionist. The private gyms we design often have a small area to prepare drinks and snacks, near the changing room.
Recovery and sleep remain more important than any powder: we cover them on the pages devoted to sleep technology and the infrared sauna.
Common mistakes with longevity supplements
Buying foreign products that do not comply with European rules; combining many supplements without knowing how they interact; stopping medicines in favour of supplements; trusting testimonials instead of studies; increasing doses thinking more is better. These are common mistakes, and all are avoided with a trusted doctor and the rule of simplicity.
Another mistake is not keeping an up-to-date list of what you take: it is important information for the doctor, especially for tests, surgery or new treatments.

Longevity supplements: our position
Elite Luxury Real Estate does not sell supplements and does not give medical advice. We select brands we consider serious and say so transparently, even when links are affiliate links. Our expertise is the home: that is why the Longevity section starts from the environment and reaches longevity supplements only at the end.
If a supplement is the last piece, the first is a home that makes the right choices easy: a bright kitchen, a dark bedroom, a nearby gym, a wellness area that is really used.

Longevity supplements: the most common categories
To find your way it helps to know the most common categories of longevity supplements, without turning this into a shopping list. Vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and iron: useful above all for documented deficiencies. Omega 3 fatty acids, often suggested to those who eat little fish. Proteins and amino acids, used by those who train or have increased needs.
Then there are the most debated molecules in the longevity world, such as resveratrol, spermidine, quercetin, coenzyme Q10 and creatine. For many of these research is ongoing and results in humans are still limited. Before taking them, talk to your doctor and check that the product complies with European rules.
Quality and storage
Longevity supplements should be stored as indicated on the label, away from heat and humidity. A cool, dry pantry, away from the hob and dishwasher, is the right place. This too is a small design detail: an area of the kitchen dedicated to what you take every day, tidy and easy to keep under control.
Longevity supplements and age
Needs change with age: after fifty the doctor may assess vitamin D, vitamin B12, calcium or protein differently than for a young adult. For women in menopause and for those on particular diets, such as vegetarian or vegan, some supplementation may be more common. In any case the choice remains individual and goes through tests.
Longevity supplements do not replace check-ups and the screenings recommended for your age. They are a complement, useful when there is a precise reason to use them.
Longevity supplements: a method in five steps
First: blood tests and a visit to the doctor. Second: assess your diet, perhaps with a nutritionist, to see whether deficiencies can be corrected at the table. Third: if needed, choose a few targeted longevity supplements from transparent brands that comply with European rules. Fourth: repeat the tests after a few months to check the effect. Fifth: review the list periodically and drop what is no longer needed.
This method turns longevity supplements from an impulse purchase into a reasoned choice. It is the same approach we follow for the home: first observe, then act, then check.
Longevity supplements when travelling and between homes
Those who live between several countries need to be careful: a supplement bought abroad may contain substances not authorised in Europe, and labels change from one market to another. The advice is to choose brands with a European catalogue, keep an up-to-date list and carry it with you, especially if you change doctor between residences.
Where to find reliable information
Institutional sources are the starting point: national health ministries publish the lists of notified supplements and guidelines on permitted substances; the European Food Safety Authority assesses health claims and novel foods. They are technical documents, but they let you check whether a product complies before buying it.
For clinical aspects, your doctor and pharmacist remain the reference. Be wary of advice gathered on social networks and of testimonials: a personal experience, however sincere, is not proof.
Longevity supplements and the Mediterranean lifestyle
Italy has an advantage many countries envy: a food tradition that research has associated with good health for decades. Extra virgin olive oil, seasonal vegetables, pulses, fish, nuts, conviviality at the table. Before looking for exotic longevity supplements it pays to make use of this wealth, found in markets and vegetable gardens, not in bottles.
The home can make it easier: a vegetable garden, a kitchen designed for cooking every day, a pantry for fresh produce, a table to sit at calmly. In the country villas we design, the vegetable garden is often part of the landscape project, close to the kitchen and easy to tend.
Longevity supplements: questions to ask your doctor
Before starting longevity supplements it helps to prepare a few questions for the visit. Do my tests show deficiencies? Can I correct them through diet? Which supplement, in what form and for how long? Are there interactions with the medicines I take? When do we repeat the tests to check the effect? The answers turn an uncertain purchase into an informed choice.
Bringing the labels of the products you are considering helps the doctor give a precise opinion. Many longevity supplements contain several ingredients, and only by reading the full composition can overlaps or excessive doses be ruled out.
Longevity supplements and quality of life
The aim of longevity is to live well for longer, not to accumulate products. If longevity supplements become a source of anxiety, excessive expense or complication, they have missed the point. A simple routine, shared with the doctor and checked over time, is the most sustainable choice.
How to read a study on supplements
Many advertisements cite studies. Before trusting them, ask a few questions: was the study done in humans or in animals and cells? How many people took part? Was there a placebo control group? Who funded it? Does the result concern a laboratory value or a real health benefit? A small, short study without a control says very little.
Systematic reviews, which bring many studies together, are more reliable than a single paper. Your doctor and pharmacist can help you understand what the research really says about a supplement.
Frequently asked questions on longevity supplements
Do longevity supplements work?
Some supplements correct deficiencies documented by tests. For many products sold as anti-ageing the evidence is limited: the choice should be made with your doctor.
Why don't you recommend NMN?
Because in the European Union it is not authorised as a novel food and therefore cannot be sold as a food supplement.
How do I recognise a quality supplement?
A clear label with quantities and forms of the ingredients, an identifiable manufacturer, independent laboratory testing, no miraculous promises.
Can I take supplements with medicines?
Only after talking to your doctor or pharmacist: some combinations can create interactions.
