Yacht charter Sicily, read the way you read a villa

Season, ports, the Aeolian and Egadi islands, weekly costs and the marine park permits to check.

A yacht charter Sicily is, unlike Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast, a circumnavigation. Worth Avenue Yachts notes that Sicily stands apart from the other islands of the region, so itineraries tend to run around the island, or hop to the Aeolian Islands in the north-east or the Egadi Islands in the west. Each of those two island groups has its own character, and the Egadi, as we will see, has its own rules and permits. That is where a good proposal differs from a brochure.

This page follows the method ELRE uses for properties: sourced data first, then judgement, then costs. For the mechanics of a charter (broker, owner, contract) see our guide to luxury yacht charter. ELRE does not own or operate vessels and is not a broker: availability, prices and contract are confirmed by the operator or broker you deal with.

Season

Worth Avenue Yachts gives a sailing season from roughly April to October. Northrop & Johnson describes June to August as peak season, with daytime highs of 30–35°C, and spring and autumn as mild. Boat International adds that Sicily often stays in the mid-20s °C into October. Winter, December to February, is cooler and wetter, with highs of 10–15°C (Northrop & Johnson).

Ports and bases

Northrop & Johnson lists Marina di Portorosa, Marina di Ragusa, the port of Palermo and Marina di Cala del Sole. Boat International gives Marina di Riposto as a berth for yachts up to 80 m. Northrop & Johnson adds a warning that matters for larger yachts: not every port accepts boats above a certain length, so match the yacht to the ports you plan to use.

The Aeolian Islands

From Portorosa, Northrop & Johnson notes, the Aeolian Islands are a short sail. Its page highlights the volcanic hot springs and mud baths, the Malvasia wine of Salina and the scenery of Lipari. Our independent sources on this group are thin: we did not find a current rules page for the Aeolian anchorages, so ask your broker to name the planned stops and who confirms any restrictions.

A week to the west: Palermo to the Egadi Islands

Worth Avenue Yachts publishes a customisable 7-day itinerary as a suggestion: Palermo; San Vito Lo Capo and the Lo Zingaro nature reserve, with a stop at the Tonnara di Scopello; Ustica, a volcanic marine protected area known for diving; the Phoenician site of Mozia in the Stagnone reserve near Marsala; Favignana; Levanzo, with the prehistoric paintings of the Grotta del Genovese, and Marettimo; and back to Palermo. The page gives no sailing times or distances, so ask the broker for them. Northrop & Johnson also points to Taormina and Isola Bella, Syracuse and San Vito Lo Capo, where yachts anchor offshore and use the tender.

The Egadi Islands: permits and rules to check

The Egadi marine protected area covers Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo, Formica and Maraone. On its own website the managing body confirms the permit system: mooring authorisations are issued by the managing body on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, at its offices, through its online portal or at the mooring fields from staff it assigns, with a surcharge on the secretarial fee. Seasonal mooring fields exist at Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo.

Beyond that, a June 2026 guide by mySea, a secondary summary, describes the rules in broad terms. We could not open the 2026 regulation itself, so we do not quote its fees or dates: confirm them with the managing body (info@ampisoleegadi.it) before you book.

  • The area is divided into zones A to D. Zone A, an integral reserve west of Marettimo and around Maraone, is not a normal option for charter yachts.
  • Navigation, anchoring and mooring are separate activities, and each may need its own authorisation. Many charter yachts are over 10 m, so rules written for small boats may not apply to them.
  • Seasonal mooring fields exist around the three main islands, with one vessel per mooring. A marked field does not guarantee a free berth.
  • The same guide reports seasonal anchoring restrictions in some sensitive areas around Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, and fees for the authorisations. We do not quote dates or amounts because we could not verify them: ask the managing body for the current ones.

What a yacht charter Sicily costs

The base rate covers the yacht and its crew. Northrop & Johnson indicates an entry point of about 50,000 dollars a week for a crewed charter, with listed motor yachts from about 210,000 to 989,000 dollars and sailing yachts from about 85,000 to 230,000 dollars; its prices may be shown in dollars or euro and exchange rates are not guaranteed.

As a general benchmark, the broker Denison Yacht Sales reported weekly averages from BOAT International listings (July 2023): about 40,000 euro under 30 m and about 71,000 euro between 30 and 40 m. These are averages, not a price list.

On top of the rate expect the APA, usually 30–35% of the fee according to Denison; VAT, 22% for Italy in the 2022 figures published by WI Yachts, to be confirmed in writing for your itinerary; and a crew gratuity, indicated by WI Yachts at 10–15% of the weekly fee in the Mediterranean.

Three checks before you sign

  1. Itinerary and ports. Which ports, with which length limits, and what is the plan if the wind changes.
  2. Marine park authorisations. Who applies, who pays, and the alternative for each island.
  3. Costs in writing. Rate, APA percentage, VAT, gratuity and cancellation terms before the deposit.
