Golf simulator room: an architect's guide for a villa

The golf simulator room seen by an architect: how much space it needs, where it goes in a villa, acoustics, air and light, and how to draw a backyard putting green.

Golf comes home

A golf simulator room lets you play at home in any weather, on courses reproduced by computer. Anyone looking for one mostly finds vendors and spec sheets. This guide tells the other side: how an architect thinks when a family asks to bring golf inside the villa.

The question is not which device to buy but which room to build. A home golf simulator is a matter of dimensions, light, acoustics and air, all of which are decided at design stage. The same goes, outdoors, for a putting green.

In short

  • Dimensions: about 15 × 18 ft on plan and 10 ft high for a comfortable bay.
  • Position: basement, garden pavilion or garage, where height is available and darkness does no harm.
  • Systems: acoustics, ventilation and lighting are designed with the room, not after it.
  • In the garden: a well-drawn synthetic putting green almost always makes more sense than a natural one.

How much space a golf simulator room needs

The starting point is the player’s swing. Trackman recommends 15 ft (4.6 m) or more of width, 10 ft (3.1 m) or more of height and 18 ft (5.5 m) or more of depth for a single bay, with at least 8 ft 2 in (2.5 m) between ball and screen. Check these figures against the tallest player in the family and the longest club.

Height decides everything. A normal living room is not enough, because a driver will touch a standard ceiling. That is why a golf simulator room belongs in the design when the levels of the building are set, not when the villa is finished.

Where to place it in the villa

A simulator lives in the dark, so it should not take the best rooms. Three solutions work well. The first is the basement: quiet, easy to black out, with height gained by a taller slab in that one area. The second is a garden pavilion, which keeps noise and guests away from the bedrooms. The third is the garage, if it is tall enough.

The route matters as much as the room. Friends should be able to reach it without crossing the house, and find a bathroom and somewhere to sit nearby. The room then becomes a place to meet, not a piece of equipment.

The room: acoustics, air and light

Acoustics. The ball striking the screen is sharp and travels through the structure. Walls and ceiling need treatment and the room needs separating from the bedrooms, exactly like a home cinema.

Air. Projector, computer and people heat a closed room, often without windows. It needs its own air supply, planned together with the house’s mechanical ventilation.

Light. Trackman specifies a projector above 5,000 lumens. The image stays sharp only with controlled ambient light: dark matt finishes around the screen, no reflections from the floor, and lighting with separate scenes for play and for guests, run by the home automation system.

Materials: a room, not a gym

The risk of a home golf simulator is that it looks like an equipment shop. Good design works the other way: a screen flush with the wall, technology hidden in a bespoke cabinet, dark timber or fabric on the walls, an armchair and a low table for whoever is waiting. The hitting surface sits flush with the finished floor, so the room stays calm when it is not in use.

These are the same choices as the furnishing of the rest of the house: proportion, materials and a few well-drawn objects.

The backyard putting green

A backyard putting green is the outdoor version of the same wish. The first choice is between natural grass and synthetic turf. The USGA is clear: homeowners who try to maintain a natural green almost always give up, because of the enormous time and specialized equipment it takes. The University of Arkansas notes that a professional artificial green is virtually maintenance-free.

For a private home synthetic is therefore the sensible choice, as long as it is treated as part of the landscape. It sits on a free-draining base, is drawn with soft shapes, and is tied to the lawn, the pool and the paths. Place it where it can be seen from the living room without dominating the view, with a clean edge and shade nearby.

What to decide first

  • Levels: clear room height, calculated on the tallest player.
  • Position: away from the bedrooms, with an easy entrance for guests.
  • Services: power, data, air and conduits for projector and sensors, planned before the ceiling.
  • Safety: screen and walls must stop a mishit too.
  • The future: the room should be able to become something else, such as a home cinema, without demolition.

Golf simulator room: frequent questions

How much space does a golf simulator room need?

Trackman recommends at least 15 ft (4.6 m) of width, 10 ft (3.1 m) of height and 18 ft (5.5 m) of depth for a single bay, with at least 8 ft 2 in (2.5 m) between ball and screen. Check ceiling height first.

Usually in the basement, a garden pavilion or a generous garage, where the height is available and darkness costs no daylight to the main rooms. It should be decided at design stage.

Yes: the strike on the screen is sharp. The room should be acoustically separated from the bedrooms, with treated walls and ceiling, and its audio designed with the room.

For a private home, synthetic is almost always the sensible choice. The USGA warns that homeowners who try to maintain a natural green almost always give up, because of the time and equipment it takes.

Yes, if a room is tall enough. A basement or garage is the usual candidate, lowering the floor only where the structure and groundwater allow it.
